The masseter is the muscle of chewing. It sits at the angle of the jaw and contracts every time you bite, clench, or chew. For clients who grind their teeth at night or clench during the day, this muscle is essentially in a workout most of the time. It grows larger over time, which can create a wider, more square lower face.
Treatment relaxes the muscle. The face slims gradually over three to four months as the muscle reduces in size. The grinding stops. The TMJ tension eases. For many clients, the aesthetic result and the medical result are equally significant.
The masseter has two parts.
Superficial masseter is the larger surface portion responsible for the bulk of the muscle's mass.
Deep masseter sits beneath and contributes to the structural function.
Treatment focuses on the superficial portion, with placement that respects the surrounding facial nerve and parotid duct. Doses are higher than other Botox treatments because the masseter is a large, strong muscle.
Masseter hypertrophy develops slowly across years of grinding, clenching, or natural muscle activity. Some clients have always had prominent masseters. Others develop the hypertrophy from stress, sleep grinding, or aging.
The muscle doesn't age in the way other facial structures do. It changes based on use, not time.
Clients in this decade may notice masseter prominence from grinding or genetics. Treatment can address both the aesthetic and the functional concern.
Many clients first notice grinding or TMJ in this decade as work stress and life pressures accumulate. Masseter treatment becomes part of a broader wellness conversation.
Clients often combine masseter treatment with jawline or chin work for a balanced lower-face result.
Clients who've treated the masseter for years continue maintenance, often with reduced doses as the muscle remains smaller from sustained relaxation.
Masseter treatment uses higher doses than other Botox treatments. Most clients receive between twenty and thirty units of Botox per side. The masseter is a strong, large muscle. Lower doses can be ineffective.
We place injections in two to three points per side, targeting the bulk of the superficial masseter. Anatomy matters, the facial nerve and parotid duct must be respected.
Results for grinding and clenching show within a week. Aesthetic slimming develops gradually across three to four months. Most clients return every four to six months.
