A weak chin is one that reads as recessed or under-projected in profile. The chin sits posterior to where balanced facial proportion would place it. This can make the nose appear larger, the neck look more sloped, and the jawline read less defined.
Treatment is structural filler placement to extend chin projection forward. The change is small but meaningful in profile.
Clients come in wanting more profile projection, often after seeing themselves in a profile photo and being surprised. Some clients have considered chin implants but want a less invasive starting point. Others are addressing the chin as part of a broader lower-face plan.
Chin projection is primarily anatomic.
Genetics determine baseline projection. Some clients have always had a less projected chin.
Dental and jaw alignment affect chin appearance. Some clients have a weak chin secondary to underlying skeletal patterns.
Bone resorption with age can slightly change chin projection across decades.
Most clients first notice this in profile photos. The nose appears more prominent because the chin doesn't balance it. The neck appears longer or more sloped.
Some clients describe their lower face as soft or undefined without being able to identify why.
Chin projection is largely fixed from young adulthood. Bone resorption with age can shift it slightly, but most clients with weak chin concerns have had the same anatomy throughout adulthood.
Some clients become more aware of their chin projection as facial selfie use increases. The angle of selfie cameras emphasizes lower-face features.
The industry treats weak chin with HA filler or Radiesse placed deep against the bone at the chin point. Voluma, Restylane Lyft, and Radiesse are the most common products.
For very significant projection needs, the industry may recommend chin implants (surgical) rather than filler.
Chin filler is precise, structural work. Small changes in projection meaningfully affect how the entire face reads, especially in profile.
For projection, we use Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Lyft, or Radiesse, placed deep against the bone. Dosing varies. A typical projection correction uses half to one full syringe.
We dose conservatively and revisit. Better to add than to remove. For very significant projection needs, we may discuss chin implants as a longer-lasting alternative.
