Visible darkening in 24 to 48 hours. Flaking and clearance over 1 to 2 weeks.

A predictable concern with a predictable fix.

What it is

Sun spots, technically called solar lentigines, are discrete patches of hyperpigmentation that develop on areas of the body that have received cumulative UV exposure. They appear on the face, hands, chest, shoulders, and other sun-exposed areas as flat, well-defined brown spots.

Unlike melasma, sun spots are stable. They don't fluctuate with hormones. They respond predictably to the right treatment.

Why Patients Seek Treatment

Clients come in noticing their hands or face have collected spots they don't remember accumulating. They want them gone. Many have tried brightening creams without significant results.

01

What Causes It

Sun spots are caused entirely by cumulative UV exposure over years and decades.

Each sunburn, each long beach day, each unprotected outdoor activity adds to the total UV dose. Melanocytes in damaged skin eventually cluster and overproduce pigment in specific spots, creating the visible mark.

Genetics play a role in susceptibility. Fair-skinned clients develop sun spots more readily. Some clients develop spots after a single intense exposure; others accumulate them gradually over decades.

02

Common Signs

Sun spots appear as flat, well-defined brown patches with sharp borders. They're typically round or oval, range from a few millimeters to over a centimeter, and don't blanch when pressed.

The face, particularly the cheeks, temples, and forehead, is a common location. The dorsal hands, chest, and shoulders show them just as commonly. They often appear in the forties and fifties but can emerge earlier in fair-skinned clients.

03

Why It Changes Over Time

Sun spots develop progressively with cumulative UV exposure. They tend to multiply over decades, particularly in the forties and fifties.

Without sun protection, the rate of development accelerates. With consistent SPF use and treatment, existing spots can be cleared and new ones prevented or significantly slowed.

04

How It's Commonly Addressed

The industry treats sun spots with several laser modalities.

BBL or IPL targets pigment with broad-spectrum light. Spots darken initially, then flake off over one to two weeks.

Q-switched and picosecond lasers target deeper or more stubborn spots.

Halo or Moxi fractional resurfacing addresses spots alongside texture and tone.

Cryotherapy can clear individual spots with liquid nitrogen.

How we approach sun spots

BBL is our primary tool for sun spots on the face, chest, and hands. It targets pigment efficiently with predictable downtime. Spots darken visibly for about a week, then flake away to reveal clearer skin beneath.

For widespread spots paired with overall photoaging, Halo combines pigment clearance with surface resurfacing for a more comprehensive result.

Most clients see significant clearance in one to three sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Maintenance treatments every twelve to eighteen months keep new spots from accumulating.

I was truly blown away after my appointment here. Every single person I interacted with, from the front desk to the providers who handled my treatments, was incredible! They made me feel so welcomed and cared for, and were both informative and genuinely kind. The space itself is spotless, cozy, and easily the most inviting place I’ve ever been for Botox. Michelle did my Botox and she was amazing! I also had a hydrafacial and dermaplaning, and I already can’t wait to come back again and again. You will not regret booking here!
