Chin dimpling is the cobblestone or orange peel texture on the chin caused by the mentalis muscle. The mentalis pulls the lower lip and chin tissue upward, and when it contracts repeatedly, the chin develops a pebbled appearance.
The texture is visible at rest in some clients and only with expression in others.
Most clients come in because they've noticed the texture in photos or in the mirror and have wanted to address it for a while. Some learn about treatment after another concern like the 11s and add chin dimpling to the plan.
Two main factors drive chin dimpling.
Mentalis hyperactivity is the primary cause. Some clients have naturally more active mentalis muscles. Years of contraction create the texture.
Volume loss in the chin can make existing dimpling more visible. As the chin thins with age, the muscle activity beneath becomes more visible at the surface.
Chin dimpling shows up most clearly when speaking, especially with specific consonants, or with certain expressions. The cobblestone texture is visible in photos at rest for some clients.
The texture is usually subtle but bothersome. Many clients have noticed it for years before deciding to address it.
Chin dimpling can develop at any age but usually becomes more visible in the forties and fifties as volume loss adds to the appearance. Some clients have had it since their teens or twenties.
Stress and habitual chin activity can accelerate the texture. So can certain dental issues that change how the mentalis works.
The industry standard is two to four units of Botox per side placed in the mentalis muscle. The technique is straightforward. Most clinics treat the same way.
Chin dimpling treatment is direct and conservative. We place two to four units of Botox per side in the mentalis muscle, with precise placement that respects nearby orbicularis oris fibers.
Results show in five to seven days. Most clients maintain on the same three-to-four-month schedule as other neuromodulator treatments. The treatment can be combined with other lower-face work in the same visit.
